7 Questions to Ask Any Smart Home Company Before You Sign

Choosing a trusted home automation company

A smart home system is an investment that stays with you for years — and choosing the wrong company can cost you installation problems, maintenance headaches and endless frustration. So we've put together 7 essential questions to ask any company before you sign the contract.

  1. How many projects like mine have you delivered?

Ask for real examples (villas, apartments, commercial projects) and before/after photos. Actual experience matters far more than any marketing pitch.

  2. Which system do you work with — and is it certified?

Ask whether the system is certified KNX or a closed proprietary one. Certified systems are easier to maintain and expand, and they don't lock you into a single vendor forever.

  3. How long is the warranty, and what does it cover?

Get the warranty in writing — on both hardware and installation. Understand exactly what's included and what isn't.

  4. What does maintenance and support look like after installation?

Ask about response times, whether there's a local support team, and spare-part availability. A smart home needs ongoing support, not just a one-off install.

  5. Is the system expandable?

If you want to add devices or systems a year from now, will it be easy — or will you have to replace everything? Ask for an open, add-on-friendly system.

  6. Do the systems talk to each other, or work in isolation?

The real value is in integration — lighting, audio, security and climate working as one system with scenes, not separate disconnected apps.

  7. Can I get a detailed, written quote?

Ask for a clear proposal listing hardware, quantities, installation and warranty — not a vague lump sum. This protects you from hidden costs.
